Obligation for environmental labelling of packaging in Italy Decree No. 116 of 3 September 2020
Applicable to any actor who places packaging on the Italian market
The aim of the decree No 116 is to reduce the impact of packaging and packaging waste on the environment. At the same time, it aims to ensure a certain level of environmental protection and to bring about a joint responsibility for packaging of all actors along the supply chain. Manufacturers are defined as “suppliers of packaging materials, manufacturers, processors and importers of empty packaging and packaging material”. However, the obligation is also directed at traders, distributors, and fillers.
In short, Decree No 116 makes environmental labelling mandatory on all packaging in Italy.
Based on the Decree No 116, all those actors are required to identify the material type of the packaging and label the packaging accordingly.
The alphanumeric code according to Decision 97/129/EC shall be used for this purpose.
In order to comply with this regulation, INEOS Styrolution has chosen to
- Printing / marking of the alphanumeric code on each packaging material itself, whenever possible.
- Providing a digital overview of all used packaging materials including the alphanumeric code.
