INEOS Styrolution’s production site in Antwerp
- Investing in a range of projects to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions
- Antwerp’s projects are a contribution to INEOS Styrolution’s commitment to global sustainability targets
In line with INEOS Group’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, INEOS Styrolution’s production site in Antwerp is investing in a range of projects to reduce emissions and energy consumption.
The recent installation of an Advanced Process Control solution in one of INEOS Styrolution’s production units in Antwerp has resulted in significant energy savings as well as a reduction of CO2 emissions. This project has already resulted in savings equivalent to the energy consumption of 1,000 Belgian households and reduction of CO2 emissions equivalent to 3,800 transatlantic flights.
One project uses a robot for cleaning parts of dehydrogenation units resulting in lower gas consumption, which in turn leads to energy savings and reduced CO2 emissions.
Another project addresses the use of variable condenser pressure in chiller units – resulting in energy savings equivalent to the consumption of 30 Belgian households.
Dominique Lebbe, INEOS Styrolution’s site director in Antwerp, says: “Antwerp, INEOS Styrolution’s largest manufacturing site shifted to using 100% renewable power in 2021. These complimentary energy and emissions reduction projects are additional examples of the many initiatives we are taking to transition to a low-carbon economy.”
INEOS Styrolution produces a broad portfolio of products at its Antwerp site including polystyrene, ABS[1] and SBC[2] materials for multiple industries including automotive, electronics, household, construction, healthcare, and others. The site employs about 360 people.
INEOS Styrolution’s sustainability targets
[1] ABS: acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, a material typically seen in many interior and exterior automotive applications
[2] SBC: styrene-butadiene block copolymer, a material used for healthcare devices like drip chambers and medical tubes. SBC is also used for applications that are compliant with food contact regulations.
